She had to know she would get caught.
Ghislaine Maxwell, the alleged “madam” who procured underage girls for the pedofile Jeffrey Epstein (who either committed suicide or was murdered while behind bars in 2019—I believe the later), discreetly bought a house with cash ($1.07 million) on a remote 156–acre estate in New Hampshire. Obviously, this British socialite, wealthy, and very intelligent person must have known that if she stayed in the United States she would eventually get caught. Although she holds citizenship in the U. S. as a naturalized citizen, she was born in France and, thus, is a citizen there, but also is a citizen of the United Kingdom (3 passports). She could have stayed in either of those other countries or, with her money, any country in the world or even lived on a yacht in the middle of nowhere to die a natural death, never being caught. But she didn’t. She took her chances. And now sits in jail probably on suicide watch.
Why? Is it a case of a criminal returning to the scene of the crime?
There’s a bit of a misnomer that all criminals return to the crime scene. Yes, some do, especially arsonists who like to take pride in their work. This is one of the reasons photos of the crowd at fires are taken by law enforcement. Burglars often rob the same house twice. Since many homeowners will quickly replace what was stolen and since the robber now knows the layout of the house, it becomes an easy target. Some, who commit crimes of passion, may return. Maybe it’s because they feel they might have made a mistake or forgot something.
But I don’t see Ghislaine fitting in any of these categories. Although she’s not talking as to why, I think either she either thought she’d never get caught or she wanted to get caught.
Can the following verse be applied to this — “Be sure your sin will find you out” (Num. 32:23)? I think so, but not necessarily in the way most interpret it. It is considered my many that it means one will eventually get caught in their sin—hand in the cookie jar. That may be true, but the context of this verse doesn’t lend itself to that interpretation. Rather, sin in and of itself is so internally destructive that it will ruin its host, the sinner. Sin has a payback and it is destruction. If one continues to sin, they will be destroyed—either by others or themselves. It’s just the nature of sin. Its consequences are inevitable and the ultimate consequence is being separated from God for all eternity. The Apostle Paul put it this way: Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life (Gal. 6:7f).
As one person put it: “No matter how safe you think you are, if you are a sinner, your sin will find you out.” (GotQuestions)
And, perhaps, that’s what happened to Ghislaine Maxwell. She planted herself in luxury and temporary anonymity realizing that eventually she would get caught, tried, convicted and start paying for her sins . . . at least from a human standpoint. She could begin a new chapter of her life, how be it, in the grey bar hotel for a number of years and then set free, back to her swank lifestyle. Of course, she’ll still need to deal with the spiritual aspect of things. A more than gracious and loving God can forgive if she will come to Him. Can we pray to that end?
