Cow Town
Friday, November 2, 2018 by Dan Allen

What appears to be a parking garage like in so many cities around the world, even Ephrata has two, turns out to be home to objects which weigh about the same as a small car, but they are living and breathing.

Cows have been long honored and worshiped in this country. In fact, sprinkling their urine on a person is considered a blessing and if you are about to move into a new home, take a cow into every room and it will be blessed. This is part of their pantheistic culture which holds to reincarnation and the cow which is most blessed.

Throughout the country in cities and villages, as well as along the roads, many cows roam free. Perhaps they are owned by someone and milked for the family or to sell. Others have long since lost the milking factor and so now they just let them go. They slowly meander in the middle of the road, lay on the medium between opposing lanes, and once I saw a cow stealing some fruit or vegetables from an unattended stand, with its front two hoofs up on the table to reach. It was a Kodak moment I missed.

To avoid the often collisions with automobiles and the traffic jams they caused, the government of this city decided to build a shelter for the cows and it looks like a parking garage. Unattended cows are moved to this cow building where they will be fed and cared for to some degree. Religious adherents pay money to feed the cows as they honor them. Urine can be purchased for those special occasions. Although I did not get close enough to see if the cows were happy, they do have all they need—food, water and a place to lay down. I did get close enough to get a good whiff. Yes, it made my day. Reminded me of when they were spreading manure near my church in Lancaster County. I love that smell.

I’m glad we don’t worship cows or even a golden calf like the Israelites through a good portion of their kingdom. We worship a Living God who loved us so much that He sent His Son to purchase a place for us in Heaven by dying on a cross. And He gives us abundant life as He is with us 24-7. Plus, I like steak. That’s on the list for soon after returning.
